Marvin
"Chico" Posey
August 28, 1964 - February 26, 2003
"I paint... color for the eye, music for the
soul"

On Wednesday, Febuary 26th, 2003 we lost one of our most talented classmates. We all knew him as "Chico" but as an adult he was known world-wide as the renowned artist Marvin Posey. Chico died from a heart attack following an art show in Atlanta. His obituary in the March 2nd edition of the Leaf Chronicle seemed short for such an accomplished and talented artist. It simply read "Marvin Thomas Posey Jr., 37, Nashville, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Grady Hospital, Atlanta". But then it followed with a wonderful article honoring his life. (Click Here to read article) Marvin's art centers around
some of life's most simple pleasures. His unique style consists of vibrant and luminous
jewel tones which appeal to a wide group of collectors. Matisse, Picasso, Monet and
Mondrian are a few of the great influences in his work. While he is best known for his
exuberant depiction of jazz musicians, Posey has also mastered the subtleties of romance
in his most recent series. In 1997, Posey was named Alumni of the year by Austin Peay State University (Click Here to Read More). He has been instrumental in many fundraising projects for his community, including support of the Roxy Theater repertory company. Enthusiast of his work
include professional athletes, public figures, authors and entertainers such as Charles
Dutton of the television series, Roc, poet and author Maya Angelou, members of the jazz
group, The Yellowjackets, and country recording artist, Louise Mandrell. His work has also
been featured on the television sitcom Living Single.
